From the Silicon Alley Insider :

“Whitman is said to be asking detailed questions about the logistics of a run and the effect she could have as governor, according to the sources, who spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to reveal the conversations.”

He/she didn’t ask to be anonymous because it wasn’t authorized, but because he didn’t want to get in trouble.  I hate people like this.
