DR. DOG ROCKED

feedback:

Dr. Dog, a seemingly humble 5-piece band from Philadelphia, unleashed a sonorous roar on Webster Hall last night. Of all the bands I’ve seen play Webster Hall, Dr. Dog easily sounded the best. Their three-part harmonies filled the room and their duel-guitar work rivalled any band touring this planet.

Fate is a well-produced, rootsy rock album. In a live setting, however, the songs from their newest album are far more grandiose. The guitars were beefy, the vocals raw. Unlike so many bands who seem to be going through the motions - playing the same fifteen songs every night - Dr. Dog was alive. They truly summoned the rock gods.

What is so great about a live experience is also what is potentially terrible. Musicians expose themselves for what they really are. Perhaps they’ve hidden behind recording studio trickery. In Dr. Dog’s case, no recorded sound can quite capture what I heard last night.
